(TELEGRAPH) - Despite looking like a ‘normal’ C30, and claimed to offer the same safety, comfort, and with four seats, it will have lithium-ion batteries installed in the propshaft tunnel and in the space normally occupied by the fuel tank.
The Swedish firm says this next-generation electric C30 will accelerate from 0-60 mph in under 11 seconds and have a top speed - with a fully charged battery - of 81 mph.
A fleet of 50 electric, factory-built C30s will go on to be used in “real-life traffic” from 2011 for two years, by a specially selected panel of drivers.
Key visual changes will be a row of new instruments, showing just road speed and energy consumption, while Volvo says the driving experience will also be different; the electric C30 has no gears and the motor’s power is delivered seamlessly, with full power available immediately.
“Sailing along almost silently is a very special experience,” says Lennart Stegland, Director of Volvo Cars Special Vehicles.
