(DAILY RECORD) - Air fares could soar to help fight climate change, Gordon Brown warned yesterday.
The Prime Minister said the aviation industry could be a potential source of revenue for a multi-billion-pound fund to tackle global warming.
The proposal could mean the introduction of a new range of flying taxes.
Brown made his comments in a speech setting out what he wanted to see achieved at a climate change summit being held in Copenhagen in December.
He said the “security of our planet and our humanity is at stake” unless global warming is tackled.
The PM also called for an international effort to raise the money needed to deal with the problem.
Emissions Brown, who warned the world had only 10 years to stop rising emission levels, said: “I believe we should also explore other potential means of raising finance internationally.
“For example, it is important that aviation and maritime emissions are brought into the Copenhagen agreement.
