(THE GUARDIAN) - Customers of the online bookseller Amazon are being warned to be wary of a fake “phishing” email asking them to check their accounts.

These emails, addressed “Dear Customer”, say: “Your order has been successfully canceled [sic]. For your reference, here’s a summary of your order.” They then give an order number and a link to “order information”, which appears to take users to an external website that does not belong to Amazon. The emails have a link to the genuine Amazon.com website at the bottom, making them appear authentic.

“From time to time, customers may receive emails appearing to come from Amazon, which are actually false emails, or ‘phishing emails’,” said a spokeswoman for Amazon. “These can look similar to real Amazon emails but often direct the recipient to a false website, where they might be asked to provide account information such as their email address and password combination.”

She advises customers to send any such emails to stop-spoofing@amazon.com and only check their order status by logging directly into their account from amazon.co.uk.

(THE INQUIRER ) - BUMBLING SMARTPHONE ENTHUSIAST Google has delayed the UK launch of its flagship Android device, the Nexus One, which could kill any chance of success it might have had in Blighty.

The Nexus One was due to appear on these shores in the second half of March but it has now been put back to mid-April. The smartphone is available to British punters direct from Google in California but you’ll have to shell out on import duties on top of the handset’s cost.

For Google, the Nexus One seems to be a Jonah in its portfolio, getting the device’s maker, HTC, into hot water with Apple. First came reports of poor 3G performance which, depending on who you speak to, might or might not be fixed. After posting lacklustre sales figures in its first month, Google enraged Jobs’ Mob further by issuing an update that brought fixes for its aforementioned connectivity problems and more pertinently, multi-touch capabilities to the Nexus One.

Apple’s Steve Jobs laid down the law, first by ranting that Google’s ‘Don’t Be Evil’ policy was “BS” and then by going after the firm by proxy of HTC. The bad news continued for Google as bailed out money peddlers Goldman Sachs cut its sales estimates for the Nexus One by 43 per cent to 1 million units worldwide. For Google it must seem a lot longer than 10 weeks since the firm’s new device garnered almost universal praise.

(GUARDIAN) - Is Facebook now “too big to fail”? I don’t mean in the sense that the taxpayer would have to pick up the pieces if it went under, but in the sense that the social networking service has achieved a position of such dominance in the online ecosystem that its eclipse is unthinkable. Is Facebook, in other words, the next Microsoft or Google?

The question is prompted by a couple of milestones recently passed by Facebook. The first is that it now has more than 400 million members. The second is industry gossip predicting that its revenues for 2010 will exceed a billion dollars. Other straws in the wind are estimates of the size of the “Facebook economy” – ie the ecosystem of applications, services and products that has evolved around the service; and the moral panics it now triggers in the mainstream media – a sure sign that they fear a competitor.

In the real world, if an enterprise – a bank, say – becomes “too big to fail”, then that’s a failure of regulation because it means that normal competitive forces have been disabled. A capitalist economy can’t function efficiently if enterprises are immune from the consequences of their mistakes. That’s the “moral hazard” that the Governor of the Bank of England was so keen to avoid when the banking crisis first broke.

Superfast Internet has arrived in Bournemouth, courtesy of Fibreband, as they have connected their first 100Mbps broadband customer.

(PRWEB) March 12, 2010 — Fibreband are pleased to announce they have successfully connected their first 100Mbps broadband customer in Bournemouth. The 100Mbps broadband service also features the ability to burst up to 1Gbps, and a random speed test revealed 336Mbps download speed, with 56Mbps upload speed. Fibreband are able to reach these speeds by utilising their Fibre Optic network, enabling speeds which are up to seven times faster than traditional copper networks, even at the same declared Mbps rate. This ensures consumers receive more of the connection speed they pay for.

Fibreband’s first 100Mbps broadband consumer, Tom Collins commented ‘The 100Mbps broadband is fantastic value for money especially as it includes phone and TV services. My broadband is now quicker than ever, I can watch countless videos online without losing the ability to do other online tasks. It’s a truly amazing service, and I’d recommend it to anyone’.

Fibreband is working in partnership with Fibrecity in order to provide this service. Fibrecity are providing the Fibre, and Fibreband are providing consumers with the service. The service is being rolled out in the Bournemouth council area of BH11, and will shortly be rolled out throughout the Bournemouth region, with other counties following later in the year.

Matt Hawkins, Managing Director of Fibreband commented ‘The interest and sign up rates for Fibreband have been exceptional. This will make Bournemouth amongst the first users in Britain to have a 100Mbps broadband service as standard, and will give businesses a significant advantage.”

Fibreband provides consumers with three optional connection speeds; 25Mbps, 50Mbps and 100Mbps. Within every package Fibreband features free weekend calls, and over forty television channels, preparing users for the analogue switch-off later on this year. The Fibre Optic network Fibreband uses is designed to carry large amounts of information at a high speed, enabling Fibreband to provide users with all three services across the same fibre.

For more information regarding these services please call 08000 098 098 or visit www.fibreband.co.uk.

(THE INQUIRER) - EXPENSIVE TOYMAKER Apple might be about to release a line of six-core Mac Pros that you will have to mortgage your house to buy.

A number of tech magazines are reporting that the Mac Pros will be based around Intel’s Core i7-970 chip and should be in the shops in a couple of weeks.

If turns out to be the case then Apple will have done a deal with Chipzilla to get the chips early again. A similar deal was done with Intel’s Core i5 chips when those found their way into Macbooks before they were widely available.

The rumour mill is also reporting that the machines will have Mac-edition ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics cards, which cost nearly £300.

The last major refresh to the Mac Pro equipped it with Intel’s Nehalem Xeon processors, with a high-end eight-core Mac Pro offering two 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5500 chips. Earlier this month, Apple upgraded that to a potential maximum 2.93GHz eight-core system.

All up we can expect any new Apple Mac Pro machines to be expensive in a way that many can’t comprehend. Apple usually takes the hardware costs of the machines and then about doubles or triples that to arrive at a retail price.

(THE REGISTER) - Google is discovering just how dangerous it is to ruffle the feathers of the major cellcos. Its Nexus One handset may be one of the most advanced on the market and bear the magical brand, but half-hearted marketing efforts by carriers have led to disappointing sales. Now, analysts at Goldman Sachs have slashed their estimates for sales of the phone this year by 70 per cent.

Several operators did lend support to the Nexus launch, despite Google’s introduction of a direct-to-consumer sales approach, but there was always a sense that their backing was grudging - and largely based on a fear of losing out, should the phone prove as wildly popular as some analysts predicted.

Their main qualms would have surrounded the route to market. Google offered the device, with a selection of carrier deals, from its own specially created web store. In some ways this was no different to an Amazon approach, but it was widely seen as the thin end of the wedge, in Google’s avowed bid to relegate the operators to bitpipe roles and put its own brand center stage. Cellcos will have heaved a sigh of relief that uptake of the Nexus was disappointing in the early stages, and that other handsets with similar capabilities quickly came along - notably the Desire from HTC, which also makes Nexus. Both these options offer Android 2.1, gigahertz Snapdragon processors and other attractions, though the Desire has been more acclaimed for its user experience.

(ZD NET UK) - A Conservative government will use open standards to break up large government IT contracts into modular components, according to the party’s pre-election technology manifesto.

In the manifesto, published on Thursday, the party said the breaking up of large contracts into interoperable modules would reduce risk and let smaller businesses bid for government IT contracts. It also said the use of open standards would “create a level playing field for open-source IT”.

“To ensure that high-tech small businesses are not locked out of the IT procurement process, a Conservative government will also introduce a presumption against government IT contracts worth over £100m,” the Tories said in the manifesto. “These policies will not only save costs, but will also help to catalyse the growth of the next generation of high-tech British IT companies.”

The Tories have been promoting the idea of a decentralised approach to government IT for the last two years. In April 2008, party leader David Cameron blogged that the use of open standards and modular contracts would “follow private-sector best practice”.

According to the manifesto, the Tories will to institute a moratorium on all planned government IT procurement projects to make sure small businesses and open-source providers are not shut out of the process.
