(THE INQUIRER) - MEMORY MAKER Kingston Technologies has confessed to security problems with a few of its secure USB drives.

In a security alert posted on its website the company released a brief statement about the drives, going so far as to ask owners to send them back. Once they’ve deleted their photos of course.

“It has recently been brought to our attention that a skilled person with the proper tools and physical access to the drives may be able to gain unauthorized access to data contained on the following Kingston Secure USB drives,” the firm writes.

The affected drives are the DataTraveler BlackBox, Secure and Elite. It’s worth noting that the latter two are subtitled the ‘Privacy Edition’ and that on its product pages the firm boasts of their government certified encryption and a whole lot of other things that are meaningless now.

(PRWEB) December 6, 2009 — Colortrac will start worldwide shipments of the latest addition to its range of SmartLF large format scanners on the 7th December. The SmartLF Ci 24 is a fast, accurate and affordable 24″ wide, technical document scanner that is easy to use with instant-on desktop scanning and copying to any workstation or printer across a network. This scanner breaks new ground as the first professional wide format scanner with a suggested minimum street price from US $3650 (excluding taxes and shipping); it is the most affordable 24″ wide large format scanning solution available today.

(PC WORLD) - A month ago, HP unveiled a bunch of new Windows 7 PCs, but ones with touchscreens were conspicuous by their absence-and given that HP has been selling TouchSmart models for close to three years now, it would have been startling if it didn’t continue to do so once the touch-enabled Windows 7 debuted.

Tonight, the company announced a second round of Windows 7 machines, including multiple multi-touch TouchSmarts. The new all-in-one touch PCs include the 20? TouchSmart 300, starting at $899, and the 23? TouchSmart 600, starting at $1049; the company is also introducing a refreshed version of the TouchSmart tx2, a $799 laptop with a flip-around 12.1? screen. Those systems are all aimed at consumers, but HP is also going after businesses with the TouchSmart 9100, an all-in-one that starts at $1299 and is meant for applications such as kiosks in public places. It’s even launching the HP LD4200tm, a $2799 touch-screen LCD TV meant for use as digital signage.

I reviewed a nicely loaded $1600 configuration of the TouchSmart 600 for PC World- it runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and has a Core 2 Duo CPU, Blu-Ray, a TV tuner with remote control, a 750GB hard drive, and a lot of other features-basically, it would be a very nice all-in-one PC whether or not it had a touch interface.

But it does do multi-touch, and the most interesting thing about this feature isn’t the hardware aspect, but HP’s software. Windows 7’s support for touch involves making features and functions such as the Start menu, Taskbar, and document scrolling work with a fingertip instead of a mouse. But Microsoft didn’t reinvent Windows to work well with finger-driven input. It didn’t even bundle any applications with the OS that really show off what touch can do.

Canonical collaborates with HP to deliver a high-performance, energy-efficient infrastructure for Ubuntu customers

London, UK (PRWEB) June 17, 2009 — Canonical, the commercial sponsor of the Ubuntu project, today announced the successful certification of Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition on the new HP ProLiant G6 servers. This extends Canonical’s existing support of Ubuntu Server Edition on the HP ProLiant servers to 17 configurations, enabling Ubuntu users to run their business applications on the world’s most energy-efficient servers. It also ensures that users can adopt an open platform in their businesses without compromising on their hardware options.

The certification of the HP ProLiant G6 servers for Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition is the result of extensive testing at the Canonical labs. Canonical has also changed the designation for all tested HP servers from validated to certified, reflecting the verification of results by HP. Additionally, HP will release the ProLiant Support Pack for Ubuntu, which includes agents, drivers, and utilities that can enhance the manageability of Ubuntu server on HP ProLiant servers.

“We are committed to certifying Ubuntu Server Edition on the hardware platforms that our users choose to run. HP ProLiant servers are easily one of the most popular of those platforms so it is heartening to have HP’s participation in this certification programme along with its recognition and verification of our work,” said Steve George, director of commercial services at Canonical. “Users who are looking for an open platform or thinking about building a cloud-based infrastructure on Ubuntu need the reassurance of strong, compatibility-tested hardware. This certification offers peace of mind along with a great hardware base on which users can start to build their new datacentres.”

“Customers want an open operating system that reduces business risk and lowers maintenance costs,” said John Gromala, director of marketing, Industry Standard Servers, HP. “Canonical’s certification of Ubuntu Server Edition on HP ProLiant G6 servers provides customers a powerful, cost-effective, and energy-efficient operating platform.”

(MOBILE TECHNOLOGY) - Dongle sales are pushing 20,000 per week and have breathed new life into the mobile market unassuming device with a silly name has appeared to be the saviour for operators and shop staff.

Sales of USB sticks (or dongles) was 18,000 per week at the beginning of March, and sales are steadily rising. It started as an offer for travelling businessmen, then students, and immigrants in temporary or shared accommodations, and now the market is capturing everyone.

Consumers frustrated by their fixed-line broadband service and cost are also now being targeted.

Vodafone’s retail staff say that stores are running out of dongles within two days of receiving the stock, and 3 staff say that dongle sales for March are 200% over target.

One 3 store manager tells Mobile that the shop is selling more USB broadband dongles than contract connections, while another salesman at 3’s central London shop says dongles make for a goldmine of easy commission: ‘You can get a hell of a lot of commission on them. They are the kind of product that you don’t need to sell. People come in wanting them Ð they sell themselves.’

USB dongle sales have exploded in the past few months. Sales have quadrupled since September to 18,000 per week. Fifty-eight thousand mobile broadband connections were sold in January, up from 27,000 in October, according to data from market research company Gfk.

iomart Hosting customers given real time access to their server and rack’s energy and bandwidth consumption straight from the data centre, via a web based managed hosting control panel.

(PRWeb UK) May 28, 2009 — iomart hosting, the managed hosting and data centre services company, is introducing a new customer hosting control panel which will enable its customers to actively monitor the amount of power and bandwidth their servers and racks are consuming.

The new control panel, which is initially being rolled out to new managed hosting and colocation customers combines traditional account and server management with power and bandwidth usage data. The control panel contains current, historic and predicted usage figures for ease of management planning.

Phil Worms, Marketing Director, stated: “This information can be used by our clients to manage their server and rack estate more effectively and assist them with their energy efficiently and cost reduction modelling. We are fast approaching the situation where carbon accounting will become mandatory and we believe that providing our customers with accurate date concerning power consumption will assist them in forecasting their IT related carbon costs.”

Phil Worms added: “Targets for power reduction can only be set if consumption can be accurately measured and apportioned. The data that our control panel provides our clients can be used to determine inefficient operating practises, hardware et cetera allowing them to make informed cost saving decisions.

From our own data, and factoring in an average server utilisation of less than 10%, we have deduced that the average server is costing anywhere between £7 and £15 per month in energy costs for simply being plugged in, powered and cooled. If multiplied across a large server estate, this represents a substantial sunk and wasted power cost, a cost that can potentially be saved from the bottom line. A further benefit of this approach is that it enables the IT function to accurately identify power consumption costs which can be internally charged back to the departments using their services.”

Finally Phil stated: “iomart hosting is committed to integrating realistic and energy efficient stewardship into every aspect of our data centre and hosting business for the benefits of our clients. We are pro actively seeking to reduce cost at every opportunity: the cost of power, cost to the environment and cost of overall hosting service, and we view the introduction of this control panel as one more step in this process.”

(IT PRO PORTAL) - Asus France has confirmed that it will phase out its popular Eee PC 1000HE, which offers an incredible nine-hour runtime to users, after the launch of a new yet-to-be declared model.

The news was confirmed by a French website Blogeee.net. “The EeePC 1000HE, current flagship of the range, like many other models, will not be continued after the launch of new machines”, the website quoted in one of its posts.

Besides, discussing company’s plans for UK, John Swatton, Asus’s netbook marketing chief, notified that the 100H and 100HE are the most popular Eee PC models in the country, and therefore the company has no intentions to discontinue these well established products at all.

Along the same line, Swatton quoted in a statement, “At present, the 1000H and 1000HE offer the best combination of functionality and performance for the price”.

In addition, Swatton also asserted that the company hasn’t discontinued the 7-inch 701, or 9-inch 900A, 901, as well as 904, either, and mentioned that all these Eee PC models are still there on the company’s focus models list.

(REGISTER HARDWARE) - Global smartphone sales grew by 12.7 per cent during the first quarter this year, but at the expense of a 9.4 per cent dip in sales of less advanced handsets, market watcher Gartner has concluded.

Over 36.4m smartphones were sold during Q1, although traditional talkers still outperformed more the advanced models with total sales of 269.1m during the same period.

However, buyers of HTC’s G1, the iPhone and their ilk helped push up smartphone sales and the group represented 13.5 per cent of all mobile sales during Q1, compared 11 per cent in Q1 2008.

“Much of the smartphone growth during the first quarter of 2009 was driven by touchscreen products”, said Gartner principal analyst Robert Cozza.

Gartner has identified two smartphone genres. An entry-level smartphone that’s “closer to an enhanced phone in specification” and which has an open OS, such as Nokia’s N76 – reviewed here.
